QT freezes computer

brand new laptop, Windows 7 64 HP, quad core, 6gb ram. Any idea why this might be freezing my computer? Also, when it DOES work, my music goes on the fritz and buzzes and stuff

Is this happening with the 8/30 build? If so can you try an older build like 8/5 and see if it still happens?

I had a look at the 8/30 build on Windows 7 64-bit and it took hours to index my files on a NAS, and made my system unusable while indexing. It also repeated this when it was restarted. I tried a few things and found that I needed to exclude my audio store from being monitored by my NOD32 Antivirus, though this was never necessary for the NS client, which can index the same files in a few minutes with the AV monitoring enabled.

I also tried the 8/30 build on an XP Pro SP3, 32-bit system running Microsoft Security Essentials AV, indexing the same files on the same NAS, and it behaved well and I didn't need to tweak the AV at all.

Anyhow, the 8/30 build went from being completely unusable to seeming like a potential replacement for NS.

I should mention that the share I was indexing was of Monkeys Audio files, not mp3s, in case this has any bearing on my experience.

Yeah, this is a known issue with the Windows FindFirstFile/FindNextFile mechanism under Windows 7 64bit. The functions are used to read folder/file information from your shared folders, and under that particular flavor of Windows it is unbearably slow when accessing network shares. I tried to get around it before but never found something that works well enough. There is apparently even a way to access versions of FindFirstFile/FindNextFile that don't have this problem if you're using Visual Studio, but as far as I can tell no such luck if you're using Qt Creator.

No, not a network attached storage. When i try to download at all, it just freezes my computer after a while. And sometimes will freeze and unfreeze (just the program itself) but it seems to still be running because the downloads are still doing their thing. Also, NS has an issue where it makes my speakers buzz while its running... newest version

I can't really say what might be causing these freezes... plus NS causing your speakers to buzz might suggest a bigger issue with your setup than something that's specific to the Soulseek clients. What are your specs? How many files are you sharing?

I posted previously that I had to set my AV to not monitor my shared folders on a NAS in order to index them. The problem has gotten worse with the 10/16/2012 build, and I had to set my AV to not scan *.mp3, *.ape and *.flac on ANY drive before I could index my share. Before making this change it was taking 20 minutes to scan a folder with 10 mp3 albums in it! The new client still takes over twice as long as my previous one to scan my shares. NS never needed any tweaks to the AV. Whatever QT is doing seems to be submitting all files to extensive AV scanning, I would guess possibly multiple times? The AV in question is NOD32 64-bit on Windows 7.

Don't you have a option in the AV to mark the client as a trustworthy application or something like that?

Had the same problem as melinapayne, turned off indexing. Everything works perfect. It wasn't the AV, it was win 7 search indexing.
