"Aborted" on every download

Hi,

I'm a Mac user. Used SoulseekQT for a few days - was pretty much OK. All of a sudden, however, I started getting "Aborted" on virtually every single download, and every single user.

I have a few dozen tracks queued up, they're on "Queued", at some point they start downloading (albeit with excruciatingly low speeds of 0.5 Kb/s or so), and go into "Aborted" shortly after.

No idea what happened - I tried switching listening ports in the App to random values, turning "use UPn" in the app itself on and off, tried switching Port Forwarding for SoulSeek directly on my router (surprisingly, it had that option!), nothing seems to help - I keep on connecting to the server, being able to perform searches, queue up transfers that start, but they just fail to complete.

If anyone has any ideas what could help, I would really, really appreciate some guidance.

Many thanks,

Dynamitri

Here's what I suggest you do for now. Start a new client session, wait for a bunch of your downloads to fail in the manner you described, then copy the contents of the Diagnostics->Logs->Transfer Queue tab and paste them here. If there is a problem with SoulseekQt in the area of file transfer I'd be very interested in pursuing it to a resolution.

Thanks, Nir

Uhhh… I've been restarting the app in and out endlessly, then went to bed. Woke up in the middle of the night, and, lo and behold, it seems to have miraculously started working - not only the transfers are going through now, but the speed isn't that bad, either — which appears to be the first time in the past few days, at least (my Soulseek is generally running 24/7 on my laptop).

Anyhow - I'll keep you in the loop should it happen again and provide you with the logs. Many thanks for getting back to me directly, Nir, that's really greatly appreciated. Also, many thanks for the continuing and ongoing efforts to keep the SoulSeek network alive and developing — words cannot say how thankful I am for that and all the money in the world wouldn't be enough to compensate for the hard work being done and invaluable joy provided (IMO).

Thanks,

D.

OK, I've had this happening a few times now (even though it's not as bad as it was previously) - the pattern is the same as it was before — I've checked the Diagnostics -> Logs -> Transfer Queue before your reply, as I've seen you recommending that to somebody else with an issue on the Message Board.

Anyhow, what kinda repeats itself is:

[Fri Jan 13 01:48:39 2012] Received peer notification from [username] that upload of [file location][file name].mp3 failed
[Fri Jan 13 01:48:39 2012] Download found!
[Fri Jan 13 01:48:39 2012] User [username] appears to still be online, re-queueing [file location][file name].mp3

Then it re-enters the queue, and either gets downloaded successfully, or dies again after a while, with the cycle repeating itself.

Previously it used to spit this out for each and every download, right now (knock on the wood) it seems to be just occasional - but still an issue, nonetheless.

Thanks.

Thank you for the kind word! It's stuff like this that gives us the energy to keep things going :) As for the log you've posted, it definitely seems like the other user is having a hard time connecting to you, as if sometimes your computer accepts the incoming connection and sometimes not. I would definitely try to isolate the problem to a short session to keep the information in the logs pertinent. If you manage such a session, I would also make a copy of the 'Peer Messenger' diagnostics log. It does sounds like it might be a problem with your network setup, but I'm happy to pursue this to the end that we have a better grasp of this problem.

Thanks, Nir

Yeah, well, I do sincerely hope it doesn't happen again - makes using SoulSeekQT so much more enjoyable to use when all runs smoothly. Should I have another "Red-Status Day" full of Aborts, I'll drop you a line, however, and provide you with all the relevant and necessary information, so that we can investigate the problem further.

Glad to be a part of the upcoming project and contribute to its development, by the way. Once again, thanks a lot for everything.

Best,

D.

Hi,
i didn't want to open a new topic for this. I would only like to know why so often all my dl go on aborted. I manually configured my port stuff and the check says that my router and slsk qt are ok. I have quite e a lot of stuff downloading, but none of the dl seems to go through. I'm really struggling to understand what's going on. I returned to Slsk from few months, after some years of silence because i moved to mac from pc. Old school is back... but with some issues.

See my advice to dynamitri above regarding getting a file transfer log. Post it here if you manage to get it.

Thank you very much for your immediate answer and support (and for what you do everyday with slsk). You re very kind.
Today, after big issues with the connection all the night, it seems to be a little better. My provider is not that good, so maybe in the last couple of weeks was just that. Anyways i would not be so optimistic, so in case of other issues I'll give it a try to that "copy and paste log", even if i'm not that familiar with that.
Best,
A.

Absolutely! Glad to try and help, and of course, anything I can do to try and make the client better. I'm a little worried that you're the second person now on Mac complaining about these mass aborts. I'm glad things are working well for the time being, but please don't hesitate to post any logs you have of the problem recurring if you have them.

Thanks, Nir

Sure,
i will. I've been a passionate follower of slsk in the past. Now that i can return to that on mac, i ll try do my best to support you-
Thanks to you.

Hello there, I seem to also be getting the same problem with files aborting. Sometimes they will say downloading but there is no activity within the download bar itself. It has worked fine all day but since this problem started (a few hours ago) I haven't been able to download anything. Your help would be much appreciated!

Here is a copy of some of the data transfer tab: (specifically the files which were first hit with the problem)

Thank you very much in advance and BIG UP Soulseek!

Let me add some extra logging code to determine exactly what's causing the failure. I'll post here later tonight.

Thanks, Nir

Try this one: SoulseekQt-7-11-2012.dmg. You should be getting the usual logging in Diagnostics->Logs->Transfer Queue, with the addition of messages following the general format of "Error downloading [file] from [user]. ... Error String: ...". Those should tell us exactly what it is that's failing during the download process.

I was having a similar problem ... downloads kept cycling between "Downloading" and "Aborted" over and over, as well as getting a Local Error showing up on some of the downloads (but not all). I and finally found the problem. I left a jump drive (i.e flash drive, stick) in one of my USB ports, and when the computer re-booted it reassigned drive letters to all my drives to put the jump drive into my queue after my D: drive (E:). Soulseek was then trying to save files to my E: drive which was no longer the same drive and therefore didn't have the same folder structure.

As a solution, I reassigned my drive letters in the Control Panel (Windows XP) and everything went back to normal. Hope this helps someone.

Interesting, I'll look into providing the user with a warning under those circumstances.

Thanks, Nir

Speaking of warnings, could you please also check for disk space? Since the current SoulseekQt builds will alternate between 'Downloading' and 'Aborted' (at insane speed) whenever the partition containing the 'Incoming' folder is 100% full. This might cause downloaded files to get severely corrupted in worst case.

Hi there. Sorry to ask about the same issue but I'm having a lot of trouble with Soulseek all of a sudden. I always had a very smooth connection and I still have a good connection for direct downloads from the internet - even the upload speeds within Soulseek are sometimes ok. It's just that, like these other users, almost all my downloads abort or otherwise download at ridiculously slow speeds (0.2kbps!). I've tried soulseek on both my macbook and mac desktop, and both suffer the same issue. I've tried different ports too, no luck. I looked for the diagnostics tab but can't find it anywhere? Sorry for being slow. I'm using the newest version of Slsk for Mac. Any assistance you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

Yet another one with the same issues, but with UPLOADS, i. e. if users download from ME.

Even some 4 MB files might need three or more tries to download because they run into 'Aborted' and have to be resumed.
I think it happens frequently if the other side uses an old or very old client, i. e. that the November 2013 and later builds---at least on Linux---are only marginally compatible with old Windows clients, hence causing this behavior.

However, the May 2013 client version was pretty OK in that respect, but the Nov 2013 one has taken things to extremes.

Never seen so much red color in Uploads window in my (now pretty long) Soulseek "life."

Hi, I am a happy soulseek user from years, mac happy soulseek user but 4 months ago my soulseek it's working really really bad and with the same issues that the other people are reporting here. Help, please!! It maybe helps but it starts to works badly when I moved to UK from Spain. In Spain it was working perfect but here, no way!!

here is log, please help!

Hope this is right?

I've been having the same issue with downloads being aborted and low speeds. getting files to download normally is a gamble. I'm not expecting a direct response, but hopefully it'll bring the issues of the others to the attention of someone at the very least.

Since a few days, I'm having the exact same problem. Uploads are faster than ever, every single download is aborted when getting first in line. I'm a Windows7 user. I've been searching for the logs. Must be my mistake, but I can't seem to find them. Can you help me out? Thanx!

Hi,

I use Soulseek for a long time now with no major issues till now. Suddendly all my downloads keep aborting.

When i try a download, in the diagnostics messages it says:

Can anybody help me? Thanks

Very interesting... can you check to see if your configured download folder exists? This definitely needs to be handled by the client, but I'm wondering if that's what's going wrong.

Thank you for answering me!

Well i've checked booth shared and download folders and they are ok. I've disconnected and re-connect slsk and the problem continues.

Thanks

You're on Windows right? Let me add some extra logging and we'll see exactly what folder it's trying to open and not finding.

Here we go: https://www.dropbox.com/s/o72wuz4qql4osid/SoulseekQt-2015-3-30.7z?dl=0

We need the same log, this time it should mention the path that's failing to open.

Thanks, Nir

Thanks so much for tring to help me.

Well, i´ve downloaded the file you sent me and runned it in m computer. The downloads keep aborting and for a specific case of 3 files that i tried to download from one single user it gives me the following diagnostic:

I'm not seeing anything wrong with the path. I suspect that this is a Windows permissions issue. Try setting your download folder to a subfolder in your Documents or Desktop folders.

Thanks my friend! :) You were right. The problem is with windows permissions. I changed the folder into a Desktop Folder and everything is ok now.

Awesome. That direly needs to be fixed. Can you do me one last favor and see if there's a problem downloading to your Documents folder? I want to make that the default from now on.

So, you whant that i change the downloading folder to my Documents folder?

Ideally a subfolder inside the Documents folder, like Documents\Soulseek Downloads

I created the folder like you said and turned it into the Soulseek Download folder and it is working.

with old version, the download initialize but never start until the next file initialize. then it goes back to the 1st file etc

of course we are both with open port according to slsk test

even more curious, while i couldn't get the download working with old version, i change my username thereand guess what, download worked immediately!!

makes me wonder, could the download problem with that user comes from the greek letters in the files i'm trying to download (with old version i only get unreadable stuff, not those greek letters).

just got back to normal username in old version, and no it does not work anymore. so that mean i cant have same username with both slsk version, even if they are not running at the same time!

ok after that i use newer slsk and it worked. but since it didn't have the right username (because i suppose i had changed it before trying that with old slsk) i changed it back to normal and F@@@@@CK does not work anymore.

and now i cant try to change username in any version, doesn't seem to help.

well i've understand what i did.... went to old slsk, changed nick (got a brand new one), downloading works!
than went to slsk qt,usual nick, not downloading, changed nick to new one created just before with old slsk, now working!!

yeah cool but i want to use my good old nick, how to work it out???

well managed to download a few files and then it all started again despite neither me or the other guy got disconnected!! shit :-(

some other weirdness i've notice.
grabbed some files from one other guys, worked without any problem (using slskqt).
the guy disconnect and the next day, i simply just cant get a single file from him, download keeps on failing.

or for another guy also using slskqt. download keep failing 90% of the time (managed to download 2 files off him in the whole afternoon despite him always having a slot for me).
seeing that tried to get the files using slskns, 1st file went without any problem and after downloading that file i switched back to slskqt and then i couldn't a get a files anymore, whatever version i used!
i couldn't even browse him or get search reslt with him (but that might be unrelated as the guy as a poor speed connection). the next day, he swith back to using slskns and since that i don't have problem downloading from him using slskqt (but i haven't yet tried to switch version. i'm waiting my download to finish and then i'll do the test...)

hello,
yesterday, my greek friend connected again and again, impossible to download from him, always getting the download failed message.

what the fuck is going on with that slskqt version???
Nir can you get in touch please, so we can try & test things.

from what i can gather, the problem is within the slskqt version as i don't seem to have problems when downloading to people using the old version slskns while 100% of the person with whom i had problem that got asked which version they used were on slskqt

Which build are you using?

i'm using slskqt 2015-4-2. i'm seeing theres a new one, will try with this one

Nir, i'm seeing that nick is in use on the network, is that you??
cant give news yet if things are working better or not as the guy i know are on slskqt and from whom i have problem downloading haven't come back online yet.

hello,

my greek friend went online and unfortunatly, impossible to download from him!

something weird also happened when trying to browse his files, at first it was impossible as i was always getting an error but the 1st time it worked, i could see all the folders on the left side list but everytime i click on one, it was empty in the right side list where i should have seen the tracks. also trying to download a folder (right click/download) didn't add anything to the download list.

at least the 2nd time this happened to me

Hi

I'm having same problem on mac... I installed it, it was great. Then it started aborting every download.

I'm finding that the application appears to lose or corrupt the link to your shared folder... this then triggers downloads to not work as you are not sharing any files yourself. Eventually I have discoverered that if I remove my share folder and set it up to point at a different directory the application will be begin to successfully download again.

BUT... Even once it is working again... it won't be for long so you need to be prepared to delete and set up a new share in a couple of days time max.

Thanks for the app, it's great. If you need any more info to help fix/test then let me know by email or whatever happy to help

It sounds like it might be having a problem re-indexing your share when you restart the client. What operating system are you on? When you say it's corrupting the link to the shared folder, what do you mean exactly?

Thanks, Nir

I am on Mac OSX. If you need any more info or for me to test anything just email as I didn't realise you had replied to this!

Thanks

hi Jezzurp,

i tried your trick and unfortunatly i saw no miracle.

Nir, got any suggestions/ideas?? because thats becoming really annoying and it would be a pity to have to go back to old slskNS as they are plenty of great new features i nthat QT version!
