This is probably related to Unicode/UTF-8 characters, and has been fixed in SoulseekQT. However, since the old client did not handle Unicode/UTF-8 properly, some incompatibility is expected.
QT only handles Unicode and doesn't provide any simple way to use distinct codepages, so it's unlikely this will ever get fixed.

How to solve this problem?
UPDT: It's on Windows 7x86.
