SoulseekQT Freezes on search on Windows 8 x64

Anytime I search using windows 8 x64, my client freezes for a minute and it returns to normal. Sometimes I have to close it with task manager. Tried previous versions. This problem did not always occur, but developed at a point in time after initial installation.

A lot of Windows 8 users are reporting these freezes. In some case they seem to go away on their own. Let me try building a version of SoulseekQt against the very latest Qt libraries, maybe they're better adapted to Windows 8 than the version currently being used. I'll link to it here as soon as it's ready.

Here we go:

http://www.slsknet.org/SoulseekQt/Windows/SoulseekQt-1-26-2013.exe

These are compiled against Qt 4.8.4. Might not make a difference, but who knows.

any news?

I have had these very same problems with win8 64 continuesly, I reinstalled win7 64 but still the same problems exists, cant access to QT - it freezes and stalls. win7 64, 16Gb, i7 and 270 000 files to share!!!!
Havent had any problems before 2-3 weeks. Boring...

I have Windows 8 and 7; I absolutely can confirm a massive amount of seemingly random freezes with SoulseekQT on Win8 - it was so bad, I simply had to uninstall it. On my Win7 x64 machines though, SoulseekQT is rock solid, stable, fast as hell, and zero crashes thus far (whew!).

All that said though, I still think SoulseekQT runs the smoothest on Linux :)

Same problem. Windows 8 x64.

same problem. Used that download link.

I wonder if the newer versions of Qt do a better job with Windows 8. I'm still a couple of versions behind the latest since I haven't been able to build a static version of Qt for a while now. This build uses the very latest Qt as a set of DLLs, just extract the folder anywhere and run SoulseekQt.exe:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/51wbqu5fxcosvsu/SoulseekQt-5.2.1.zip

Let me know if it's working any differently!

Kinda like MS at large :)
Anyway, I am running on Win8 and everytime I start SSQT, after a few seconds the CPU shoots up to 50% (which means one cpu is used for SSQT only), and you pretty much cannot use it anymore. I have to kill it and start a new.
Downloaded the nightly version of SoulseekQt-2014-1-8.exe, that did not help at all.

On the mac I have the same horrible performance, but at least it is working and can respond once in a while.

I have 4 GB of RAM, and lots of disk space. My MP3s are on a USB drive which I am sharing in SSQT. Removing it from there makes things a little better, but still the response time between click and response is horrible.
I really like the new SSQT and how it looks and does things, but if the cost is this performance, give me the old NS any day.

One other thing, when going over the share and registering which files I have, it locked up as well.

Did not mean to rant, but I think this is not yet release ready at all.

Regarding Mac, I created a new build a little while ago that also uses 5.2.1:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/yrl07x546ns2sjx/SoulseekQt-2014-2-3.dmg

Not sure if it would perform any better, but it's probably worth a try.

hey Nir, just download the new version from your dropbox and just when I click SoulseekQt.exe I receive this error "This application failed to start because it could not find or load the Qt platform plugin "windows". Reinstalling the application may fix the problem"

and then another error (runtime error)

:(

I got the same thing when I tried to run it from the unzipped folder.

Tomarsh

Sorry, apparently it was missing a DLL. This version works for me on a fresh Windows 8 installation:

Any luck with that one?

iwasnvr's picture

Still freezing with that one

Okay, I'll set up a Windows 8 dual-boot on my machine and run some tests. Thanks!

To anyone who's having these freezing problems: How many files are you sharing, and are you trying to do anything in particular when the freezes occur?

iwasnvr's picture

I share my entire music library (around 15k songs), and no, it freezes after a few seconds after opening.

I tried to change my account, to install all the new options you presented here, to change the files I was sharing, and it still keeps freezing after some seconds on search, suing 50% of the CPU. Everything was well, until the first day it happened. Then it never worked out no more. It is absolutely frustrating for someone so used to Soulseek..

Can you unshare everything and see if it still happens?

iwasnvr's picture

unshared everything, my disc usage is down to 0% yet slsk still crashed

I'm starting to have same issue now in Windows 7 and with Soulseek SoulseekQt-2014-3-14.exe sometimes when you are doing more tan one search and also downloading folders, Soulseek got stucked and high CPU usage in Soulseek process.

That's not good. Is there a way we can organize a debug session over instant messenger? Let me know in private what's a good way to reach you.

i think i've experienced the same behavior this morning. left soulseek running all night, when came here it was using about 30%-50% of cpu and didn't show any gui for several minutes - after that time i manually forced process to stop and re-run app. however this was present before 3-14 too.

I am having the same issue on my windows 8. I can't even download one song without it freezing up. And it tells me it has high cpu usage. I tried downloading from the link above but it didn't make a difference

A new version of Qt was just recently released that *may* have better support for Windows 8. Give me up to 48 hours to try and get a new build against it, definitely worth a shot.

Thank you Nir!

Try this one: https://www.dropbox.com/s/dpaqxo2nm4be66f/SoulseekQt-2014-6-5.7z

As far as I can tell the executable can be run by itself with the new Qt. Let me know how it works for you!

MELERIX's picture

this version seems does not load the previous settings.

My bad, try renaming the executable to SoulseekQt.exe

MELERIX's picture

thanks, now is working ;)

can you release a installer later with new translations files included please ?

since I've installed win8 I'm having the same a annoying freezing issues. My CPU goes around 50% and the application freezes for 10 seconds or so. I've tried also this new release (2014-6-5) and I'm still getting same behavior.
Anyway, soulseekNS works just fine

not sure if related, but check if you are using the latest and updated Visual C++ libs (you need the redistributable libs only).

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2019667

also check your PC with CCleaner, may be there could be an error in registry or something else.

http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard

also consider update to Windows 8.1 Update 1, check in the store or in Windows Update, the update is free.

I'm on Win8.1, installed the newest version, updated C++, still get the same freezes.

Can confirm this!

Is either one of you up for a TeamViewer debug session? I'd have to install some tools on your end. If so, ideally private message me a way I can PM you on (like Google Hangouts for example), or failing that a TeamViewer login and password (although the latter changes every time you restart your computer).

same problem here.. :/ i'm running windows 8.1. x64 including the update 1! also updated to the latest Visual C++ libs... but soulseekQT freezes with the latest download version AND with the version Nir posted some posts ago..that's pretty annoying, cause i can't use soulseekQT..and so i have to use soulseekNS but that's no solution...i really hope this "bug" will be fixed soon! :)

greetings.

I'm currently testing on Windows 8.1 and so far I'm not able to reproduce these freezes. I'm starting to wonder if it's something to do with the security or antivirus software one has installed on their computer... I know one user had AVG on their system. To anyone who is experiencing these freezes, what security/antivirus software do you have installed?

Hey, I have AVG too. I tried to add Soulseek to its Firewall as "allowed" app, nothing. Then I "temporarily disabled" AVG and started Soulseek, but still get the freezes. I also run latest SoulseekQT in Win7-comp-mode.

INTO--THE--DARK--ABYSS's picture

yeah i got AVG Internet Security too on my system...but i don't have the freezes with SoulseekNS & hadn't the freezes with SoulseekQT and AVG running under windows 7..hm...i just tried if there would be any changes when i make a exception in AVG for the SoulseekQT .exe file and the directory...but nope..it's still freezing shortly (1 minute or so) after i started it. :(

P.S. i also tried to run it in windows 7 compatibility-mode but that also didn't solve the problem..

P.P.S. temporarily disabling AVG didn't solve the problem too...

Freezes are confirmed on my end to be caused by AVG. SoulseekQt started freezing as soon as I finished installing AVG Internet Security, and completely went away after uninstalling AVG and rebooting.

MELERIX's picture

mm, but for example I'm not using AVG and sometimes I still got UI freezed during search or during download folder dialog, it happens randomly ofc, so is not easy to reproduce, anyway I've added a picture in the dropbox folder for translations, if you can take a look please, maye be you can reproduce it trying to download the same as in the picture, from same user, and same folder.

That particular user is offline right now, but I'll try them when I see them online.

INTO--THE--DARK--ABYSS's picture

ok, i've uninstalled AVG now (now installed ESET Smart Security) & soulseekqt f*cking works now!! :D :D :D no freezes shortly after the start and also now freezes in the search dialog or so..damn, now i'm happy! HOORAAAY!!! ^_^

Glad to have this confirmed by someone else ;) and glad it works for you!

Thanks, Nir

ok meanwhile i had freezes while searching: i searched for the term "amon armath" & slsk freezes shortly but than it would continue as always, but if i search for the term "metal" it will freez constantly consumes much RAM (over 1GB in 1 or 2 minutes!!) and the CPU will go high to 20-30%..and than the program chrashes! and also i got freezes when i have more than 1 searches with much results per search-tab running.. :/ i'm using now the latest version (SoulseekQt-2014-6-15) but experienced the same in the version before. i also disabled ESET smart security, which didn't help.

Well, very large searches will yield very high memory consumption. You can try decreasing the limit of processed search results under Options->File Sharing. The default is 10,000, though that may be too high as a default.

MELERIX's picture

uh, 10000 is a lot, maybe default in 200 or 400 for next versions should be enough.

psynaturecybine's picture

just remove one zero. 1k is okay ;)... but what if among those, there is none that im looking for? what if its hidden because of the default limit? sadly, we can't set quality before pressing "enter"... (so please consider even 5k)

ps. im still experiencing freezes when slsk left running over long period of time... (also while im here note that on download dialog, "enter" causes "cancel" action, instead of download)

MELERIX's picture

yes, 1K is ok too, I was just talking about a default value, of course without removing the option to allow users increase or decrease the value.

I generally leave running Soulseek for long periods of time too, so I'll try check if can reproduce the same issue, maybe we can find a way to reproduce always the issue, in order to discover the root of the problem.
